Answers to Common Pet Grooming Questions

At Featherle Pet Care Chantilly, we know that choosing a groomer is an important decision. Whether you are visiting us for the first time or are a long-time client, we want you to feel confident in the care your pet receives. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from pet parents about grooming, safety, frequency, and more.

If your question is not listed here, please feel free to call us at 703 378 9500. We are always happy to help.

  • How often should my pet be groomed?

Grooming frequency depends on your pet’s breed, coat type, and lifestyle. As a general guide:

    • Long-haired dogs (like doodles, shih tzus, or spaniels): every 4 to 6 weeks
    • Short-haired dogs: every 8 to 12 weeks or as needed
    • Double-coated breeds (such as golden retrievers or huskies): every 6 to 8 weeks, especially during shedding seasons
    • Cats: long-haired cats may need grooming every 8 to 12 weeks; short-haired cats less frequently

We are happy to recommend a schedule that works best for your pet’s needs during your appointment.

  • Do you groom cats?

    No We don't

  • My pet is nervous or has had a bad grooming experience in the past. Can you help?

Absolutely. We specialize in working with nervous, anxious, or previously mistreated pets. Our team uses gentle handling, patience, and a quiet environment to help build trust. We never force or rush, and we will work with you to develop a grooming plan that your pet can tolerate and grow comfortable with over time.

If your pet has specific triggers or behaviors we should be aware of, please let us know when booking the appointment.

  • What does a full grooming appointment include?

    Our full grooming service includes:

    • Brushing and de-tangling
    • Bathing with coat-appropriate shampoo
    • Blow drying by hand or low heat
    • Nail trimming and ear cleaning
    • Anal gland expression (if needed or requested)
    • Haircut or trim based on breed standard or your preference
    • Final brush-out and styling

Every grooming appointment is customized based on your pet’s breed, coat condition, and behavior.

  • Do you offer nail trimming without a full groom?

Yes. Nail trims can be scheduled as a standalone service and are also included in all full grooming and bathing appointments. We recommend nail trimming every 3 to 5 weeks to maintain paw comfort and posture.

  • What’s the difference between grooming and bathing?

Bathing includes a deep-clean shampoo, coat conditioning, drying, and light brushing. It’s ideal for pets between haircuts or for breeds that don’t need regular trims.

Grooming includes all of the bathing services plus a full haircut or trim, based on either breed standards or your custom requests.

  • How long does grooming take?

Grooming times vary depending on your pet’s size, coat condition, and temperament. Most appointments take 2 to 3 hours. If your pet requires extra care due to anxiety, matting, or special needs, we may schedule additional time.

We’ll provide an estimated pickup time when you drop off your pet. We’ll also call or text as soon as they are ready.

  • What should I bring to my pet’s appointment?

Please bring your pet on a secure leash or in a carrier. If your pet has any known medical conditions, allergies, or skin sensitivities, let us know in advance.

    You’re also welcome to bring:

    • Medicated shampoo (if prescribed by your vet)
    • Notes or photos showing your preferred haircut style
    • Treats your pet enjoys, especially for nervous pets
  • Do you use crate dryers?

We do not use heated cage dryers. Pets are hand dried or dried using a low-heat, low-noise air system, depending on coat type and tolerance. Safety and comfort are always our top priorities.

  • What if my pet has fleas?

If your pet arrives with fleas, we will treat them using a flea bath and notify you immediately. An extra fee may apply for sanitizing our space afterward. We recommend using monthly flea and tick prevention to avoid infestations.

  • Can I stay during the grooming appointment?

We find that most pets do better without their owner present, as they tend to relax and respond better to the groomer’s direction. However, we understand some pets have special needs. Let us know in advance if you think your presence is necessary, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request.

  • Do you groom older pets?

Yes, and we treat senior pets with special care. We adjust the grooming process to make it shorter and more comfortable, use softer handling, and avoid unnecessary stress. If your older pet has mobility issues or health concerns, please let us know ahead of time.

  • How can I schedule an appointment?

Call us at 703 378 9500 or email Featherlechantilly@canine-clippers.com. We are open Tuesday | Friday  8-6 PM, Sat Via appointment only, Sun and Monday is closed.

We recommend booking in advance, especially during peak seasons.
