Winter has ended and early spring arrived with February marking the beginning of pet shows in the United States. Ever since they became members of family, community and society, how pets look has become increasingly important!
The age-old art of grooming can be traced back to ancient times when poodles were styled with what is now known as the ‘Lion Clip’. In Roman Times, groomed dogs were depicted on coins. Paintings of Lords & Ladies from the Elizabethan Era (late 16th—early 17th century) depicted well coifed dogs during a time when Poodles were officially assigned as ‘dogs of the Court’.

March 2013: Prison Programs For Training Dogs

Many people think of license plates when asked what inmates produce in prisons. But, for over thirty years, in almost every state, dog training programs have become common jail curriculums. Utilizing a partnership between prisons, organizations like the Humane Society and local animal shelters, dogs are trained by inmates to service disabled Vets and others, those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as companions for the elderly. One program, “Puppies Behind Bars”, provides inmates with 8-week old puppies for training to service wounded war veterans. The puppies come, along with their crates, to share a cell.

With a number of industries weakened and the economy in continual flux, many people, re-thinking their career choices, are going back to school. One industry that continues to grow, despite our rocky economy, is with pets: In 2011, Americans spent almost 51 Billion dollars on their pets. Although 65% of this was spent on food and veterinary costs, it was pet services, such as grooming, that grew, from $3.51 Billion dollars in 2010, to $3.79 in 2011. And, American Pet Products Association President, Bob Vetere, predicts that 2012 figures will show over $53 Billion total, with $4 Billion for pet services.
